A practical guide to applying for jobs in Papua New Guinea

Finding a vacancy is only the first step. Before applying, take time to understand the role, prepare evidence of your skills and follow the employer's instructions. These practical steps can help school leavers, graduates and experienced applicants prepare a clearer and more relevant application.

1. Prepare a job-focused CV

Your CV should help an employer quickly understand who you are, what you can do and how your experience relates to the vacancy. Keep the layout readable and make the most relevant information easy to find.

  • Include current contact details, education, work history and relevant skills.
  • Describe your contribution with clear examples rather than listing duties only.
  • Adjust your skills and experience section to match the genuine requirements of each role.
  • Check dates, spelling, phone number and email address before sending.

2. Write a specific cover letter

A useful cover letter connects your background to the employer's stated needs. Avoid sending the same general letter for every vacancy.

  • Address the named contact or recruitment team when that information is provided.
  • State the exact position you are applying for.
  • Choose two or three relevant strengths and support them with examples.
  • Close professionally and mention the documents attached to your application.

3. Check the vacancy before applying

Read the full advertisement, not just the job title. Employers may specify qualifications, experience, location, required documents and a particular application method.

  • Compare the required qualifications and experience with your own background.
  • Prepare only the documents requested, such as a CV, cover letter, certificates or references.

4. Applying as a school leaver or graduate
